Praise for The Board of Education!
It’s the rare record that you can bring to your pre-teen kids without steeling your nerves against six months of repeated plays and an onslaught of cartoon earworms. The BoE did it right: They made an educational record without telling themselves that they were making an educational record. You don’t need to have been raised on “Schoolhouse Rock” to recognize how smart that is. – The Seattle Times
Seattle powerpop band Central Services combine their love of melody and hooks with classroom subjects that might otherwise be yawned at by Fourth Graders, to create the ridiculously catchy, funny, and intelligent CD Central Services Presents: The Board of Education! - Kids’ Music That Rocks Blog
“The Board of Education album sounds like nothing else you’ll hear in the kids music genre all year. I can’t think of another album that will generate the chatter this one will.” – Zooglobble website
“What sets [Central Services] apart is something spectacular: The Board of Education.” –The Seattle Weekly
“Forgive them if the name sounds so very official. Central Services’ The Board of Education is anything but official and boring. Their music seems to span the generations and genres.” - The Seattle P-I (R.I.P.!)
“Their new kids’ CD educates like Schoolhouse Rock… and yet sounds a bit like Ben Folds Five… Regardless of who they remind us of, they have a sound that’s melodically their own with catchy songs full of well-thought out lyrics so multi-layered you’ll find yourself listening to them over and over again… And let’s face it, tin foil robots + volcanoes = AWESOME…” - Otterhop blog
“A sound somewhere between “Bread” and “The Posies.” -The Seattle Times
“These boys have the soundtrack to your next aimless Sunday drive.” -Seattle Weekly
“The [LP] is chock full of dulcet melodies and high-quality songwriting and performing…sweetly refreshing in all the right ways, and a perfect way to help you ease out of the work-a-hol-ism, if even for only an hour.” -Three Imaginary Girls
“A most enjoyable jaunt.” -Tasty Fanzine
“It’s a strange formula but all the elements seem to work. Take two guys who transplanted from Connecticut to Seattle, the friendly ear of indie music DJ’s, then swirl that all around with some catchy harmonized melodies led by the least likely member of the band, the drummer!” -Tacoma Weekly Volcano
“The first thing about CS that will catch most people’s eyes is the lead singer is also the drummer, but the thing that will catch most people’s ears are the melodies.” -Seattle P-I
“Central Services has been playing pretty much nonstop this week on my stereo. This is the sort of music that would definitely get you dancing no matter what mood you are in.” -Off the Record / March on Electric Children Blog
“Central Services have made a record that will calmly find its way into the hearts and minds of many listeners who are aching for the sharpness of pop music from days gone by.” -Indiana University Digital Student
ok i was curious about this central services band that some of you had mentioned. i found an mp3 called ‘four letter word’ and besides being a title you might give a song that you wrote in junior high, it sounded like an emerson, lake & palmer b-side. the music didn’t bug me as much as it’s stupid title. – Annoymous Skatterbrain! poster
